What is a Brazilian Blow Dry?

The Brazilian Blow Dry is quickly becoming a buzz phrase in beauty circles, but if you’re in the dark or think it’s something completely different to what it actually is, then we’ll explain.

For those of us who have frizzy or curly hair, we can spend a lot of time, money and effort straightening out our tresses each day to achieve that silky, straight and manageable hair we wish we’d been born with.

The Brazilian Blow Dry takes away this stress.  To achieve poker straight hair, you won’t need your hair straightening irons, serums, lotions and potions.  Just one semi-permanent treatment in the salon can last for up to 4 months, giving you that shiny, slick look you want with the minimum of effort each day.

How does it work?

Your stylist will apply a pure keratin treatment to your hair —the same substance that already exists in your hair, skin and nails—which is left for a length of time to soak into the fibres of the hair.

First of all your stylist will wash your hair normally and towel dry any excess moisture before applying the keratin treatment.  This will then be left on your hair for at least 30 minutes (longer if you have very long or thick hair) until all the keratin has been absorbed.   Your hair will then be blow-dried and then the keratin will be set into your hair using a pair of specially developed, extra hot, straighteners for this purpose.

How to look after a Brazilian Blow Dry

It is important that you use the right shampoo and conditioner after a Brazilian Blow Dry.  Any hair products that contain sodium chloride could strip away the keratin and the effects of the treatment won’t last so long.

You will need to allow your hair a chance to settle following the treatment, which means no washing your hair (or going swimming) for at least 4 days.

Initially you may find that your hair feels much flatter than when you usually straighten it yourself, this is perfectly normally and will bounce back again when you can start washing and conditioning again.  You may need to wear your hair up or back in a ponytail until this period has passed.

From your first hair wash onwards you will find that after your usually blow drying session your hair is flat, sleek and shiny and you’re ready to head out of the door in half the time it usually takes you to get ready.  What’s more, a little humidity, shower or rain or the office air conditioning won’t turn you back into a frizz ball within an hour!

Brazilian Blow Dries can be applied to any hair type, even ones that have recently been coloured.  It works especially well on dry and damaged hair, to help repair and make your hair your crowning glory.
