Sadly not all of us in life are blessed with peachy smooth skin, for a lot of us the harsh reality of our skin is large, open pores which are prone to blackheads and spots. The combination of oily skin and open pores means that dirt is trapped in the pores, and this is what you can see with the human eye — although it has to be noted that no-one can see our blackheads as well as we can, in fact most people won’t notice the imperfections of other people’s skin unless it’s pointed out to them—but nevertheless, for those who suffer from blackheads, it can dent your confidence.
However, the good news is that skin prone to blackheads can be treated quite easily. Yes, it takes a little bit of dedication and there are some definite no-nos if you want your skin to be as clear as possible, but we’ve put together a quick guide in how to look after blackhead prone skin.
Don’t Squeeze
Yes, we know it’s satisfying but in the long run it’s is totally counterproductive. Unless you’ve got squeaky clean hands, you’ll just be adding in more dirt and grime to those poor pores than you’re taking out. The pore will just refill in a couple of days and you’ll be back to square one. You also run the risk of spreading your blackhead outbreak.
Get a good skin care routine happening
Every morning and every evening wash your face with a mild facial cleanser (strong products often cause the skin to produce more oil, thus more blackheads) and pat dry, apply toner then any serum or facial cream designed to combat oily skin, and then apply a light moisturiser. Find a good product that helps to reduce pores and put that on after moisturising.
Never go to bed with your make up on
It’s really important that you wash away all of the grime, dust, dirt and make-up your skin will have dealt with that day. If you’re usually too tired to undergo the whole process just before bed, then do it an hour or so before bed.
Drink plenty of water
Hydrating your skin will help it to be clearer and smoother and help to flush out toxins.
Use a Primer
Applying a primer before your usual foundation will ensure that the foundation doesn’t settle in your pores and aggravate your skin.
Find a suitable BB cream
If you don’t wear foundation then find a BB (beauty balm) cream that will help to protect your skin from the elements without blocking pores.
Exfoliate
Whether you choose to do this daily, twice weekly or weekly is entirely down to you and how often you feel your skin will benefit. Exfoliating will scrub away all the dead skin cells that can block pores and leave your skin looking young and fresh. However, if you’re prone to skin reddening then you might want to save exfoliating for night time.
Have Regular Professional Facials
A qualified beautician will be able to advise you better on how to care for your skin and a professional facial will deep-cleanse your skin getting rid of existing blackheads and helping to prevent further breakouts.
Avoid touching your face
If possible, avoid touching your face during the day. Each time you stroke or touch your face you will be spreading around oil and dirt and helping those pore to block up again.
